Meet Us

Dogsledding - Ely, MN Northwoods Wilderness.
A Family Affair.
Jonathan, Reseth, Joanna, Daryl, John, and Cherish Oberg

We, the Oberg family, live in Ely Minnesota. John, a Northern Minnesotan, grew up on the west end of the wild and scenic Echo Trail. He helped his family literally carve a resort out of the wilderness. At the ripe old age of thirteen, John began guiding guests into what is now called the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. He learned a great deal about survival in the woods from his father and other woodsmen.

One day John met Daryl, a native Floridian.
He said, "You are my wife!"
She replied, "Good-bye city life."

And thus they began their new life together in the north woods.

No doubt it was a huge adjustment for Daryl. She exchanged bare feet for Sorrel boots, cut off shorts for a snowmobile suit and busy city life for remote wilderness life. But now she enjoys the change of seasons and has become a true pioneer woman braving the different challenges of Northern Minnesota winters.

John and Daryl have three precious children; Cherish, Joanna, and Jonathan. Cherish works as an Accredited Staging Professional/ webmaster/secretary at Bear Island Land Co., a real estate office in Ely. Her computer skills have greatly helped us with our website. She also enjoys playing keyboard and writing songs to give praise to God, and released her first CD in August 2002 (Cherish Oberg - Cherish the Glory) with plans for more projects in the future. Joanna enjoys her job at the Ely Vet Clinic grooming dogs and guiding for the dog sled trips in the winter. Jonathan, an Eagle Scout, has his pilot's license and is currently serving in the Air Force. The young woman by his side is his new wife, Reseth, a wonderful addition to our family! They each thoroughly enjoy the different activities each season offers in Ely.

Joanna and several husky pups Joanna, who has always had a particular affection for animals, became interested in sled dogs when some friends of hers introduced her to this exciting winter sport. She asked her parents if she could please have a couple of dogs to pull her in a sled. Since they already had one family dog, her parents said she could have two dogs - but no more! They weren't about to have a yard full of howling dogs like other mushers.

No one knows exactly how it happened, but in just four years, their dog yard expanded to house about 50 dogs.

Now the whole family enjoys dog sledding.
