What to Bring on Your Dog Sled Trip
Ely, MN Dogsledding
Apparel
Necessary Items:
(For single day trips, just bring one pair of each item listed)
- Three pairs of heavy wool or synthetic socks
- Two winter hats - one thin, one thick
- Two pairs thin gloves, like Thermax liners for dexterity
- Two pairs of mittens - it's a good idea for them to be large enough to fit loosely over gloves
- A warm winter jacket with a hood.
- Two pairs of synthetic long underwear (tops and bottoms)
- Two synthetic fleece shirts or wool sweaters (baggy)
- Insulated wind pants
- Warm, winter, boots with removable liners (bring extra liners for camping trips) - please make sure your boots do not fit too snug as this will also restrict your circulation.
- Neck gaiter
- Sleeping bag rated at least 30-40 degrees
- Flashlight
Note: Cotton is a great fabric for summer because of its breathability, but
in the winter it can cause problems especially when it is next to your
skin. During periods of high activity, you generally sweat. The cotton
absorbs your moisture and stays wet. Then when you are sitting still
for awhile, you cool down and the wet cotton layer next to your skin
causes you to stay very cold. For this reason we recommend synthetic,
wicking fabric.
It is a good idea to have several layers of
clothing, especially on top. Then as you start to heat up, you can remove
them before you work up a sweat. As you cool down, you put them back
on to stay warm.
Optional Items:
- Camera
- Hand warmers
- Sunscreen
- Water bottle
- Sunglasses
- "wet wipes"
For those who desire to rent appropriate outer clothing and/or boots, this
is available upon request.
