Our Backyard
Ely, MN is located in the heart of the Superior National Forest, north of the Laurentian Divide, and is the primary entrance to the BWCA Wilderness. BWCA stands for Boundary Waters Canoe Area. It encompasses over a million acres of virgin forests and roadless area, stretching for two hundred miles along the Canadian border. Cleared trails called portages connect the lakes allowing you to explore all the crystal clear, rocky-ledged lakes you desire. Various forms of wildlife are seen frequently while on a wilderness adventure in the boundary waters. Many outdoor enthusiasts come to this quaint border lakes town to enjoy activities that each season has to offer. This area is known for its 10,000 lakes, pure water, pollution-free air and almost non-existent crime.
The industry in Ely has shifted from a mining emphasis to logging, construction, and tourism. There are a wide variety of accommodations for tourists including 34 resorts, six motels, and 10 campgrounds. Ely is served by two grocery stores, 13 restaurants and a retail shopping area providing complete services. The Grand Ely Lodge and a 30-unit Super 8 Motel are recent additions to the city.
Although Ely's population swells quite a bit with summer visitors, it is clear that more and more people are recognizing the beauty and peace of the winter season. It is interesting to note that we are the only town in Minnesota that receives the heavy snowfall coming from the Ontario Snow Powder Belt. Snowmobiling, snowboarding, downhill and cross-country skiing, and dog sledding have all been increasing in popularity. In fact, Ely is the dogsled capital of the lower 50 states and is only second in the world to Alaska in the number of dogsledding guide services offered. Everyone who comes to visit Ely usually leaves planning when their next visit will be. That is because Ely truly is unique.
